About Pet Memorial Portraits

Hi, I’m John Cusworth, the artist behind “Pet Memorial Portraits”.

I am a recently retired Secondary School Teacher in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. I was a Chemistry, Maths and Science teacher – but always had a passion for oil painting, mainly landscapes and seascapes. Recently I have tried my hand at painting animals – dogs, cats and horses.

I love dogs – in particular Cocker Spaniels which I have had as a pet and best friend since I was a young boy. Sarge, Lady, Tramp, Scamp, Chloe, Jake, Rocky and Misty. All different varieties – Black and White, Black, Golden and Blue Roans. Our dogs have also produced a few litters of adorable puppies over the years.

Our pets bring so much joy into our lives. They love us unconditionally – whether we are up or down. They share our fun times, listen patiently to our complaints and lick away our tears.

Unfortunately your dog or cat has a much shorter lifespan than us and we inevitably have to say goodbye to them far too soon. Of course, you can get another pet, and they will invariably worm their way into your heart as well. But they will never be the same as the dear friend that you have just lost. Each pet has his or her own unique personality, so they can never be completely replaced.

The idea behind Pet Memorial Portraits is to provide you with a life-like image of your special friend that can be framed and displayed prominently on the wall so that you can see that cheeky glint in their eye to lift you when you are down.

My main medium is oils, but I have been trying pastels and pencils. Each medium has its merits, and it comes down to a matter of personal preference.
